They Offer Me Sex As A Favor Because I’m Disabled

Surreal… simply surreal

I just read an article on BBC.com that left me disgusted. Why the hell do we still treat disabled people as asexual beings or objects of morbid curiosity? I was shocked by these accounts, but even more shocked that this isn’t an isolated case.

Holly was 16 when someone asked if she could have sex because she was disabled. Sixteen years old.

A teenager. Imagine the impact of this question on a young woman discovering her sexuality. Today, at 26, she still receives messages on social media from people “offering” to have sex with her. As if they were saints doing charity work. As if she should be grateful for the interest.

The condescension disguised as kindness is disgusting and traumatizing.

What infuriates me isn’t just the ignorance, but how natural these situations seem. These “offers” are considered normal, even well-intentioned by some.

Disabled people are people.
